Josh graduated from Durham University with a first class Master of Chemistry degree (MChem), with his final research project relating to synthesising and investigating a luminescent mitochondrial pH probe.
He achieved his pre-EQE qualification in 2017 and qualified as a European Patent Attorney in 2018. Josh is now working towards qualifying as a Chartered Patent Attorney.
Josh joined Gill Jennings & Every in 2018, having begun his training in 2015 at another firm of patent and trademark attorneys in Germany.
Prior to this, he worked in biochemical research at Evonik Industries and the University of Oxford, where he investigated antibody-drug conjugates and the effects of post-translational modifications on proteins.
Most of Josh’s current portfolio focuses on pharmaceuticals and applied chemistry, such as cancer therapeutics, small molecule drugs, heart valves and material binder chemistry. At his previous firm, Josh worked on mechanical devices, medical devices and injection moulding technologies. This experience, coupled with his time spent working in industry and in research, means that he is adept at getting to grips with technical subject matter quickly and determining the best strategy for protecting it.
Josh has a particular interest in patent litigation and works on cases before the High Court and the UKIPO. This includes preparing statements of case, interviewing experts and appearing at hearings and in court. Josh also works on contentious patent opposition and appeal cases before the European Patent Office.
Josh gives clients clear and focused advice that helps them decide not only what they could do, but what they should do. In day-to-day life this means making calls on how to get the most value out of an IP budget, helping clients determine how to focus a freedom to operate search and explaining risks in a direct and understandable way.
When not in the office or keeping fit in the gym, Josh will normally be doing something music related, whether that’s playing the piano, producing, hunting for new records or DJing. He also speaks fluent German, having lived and worked in Germany for four years.
