Stuart graduated with a first class honours degree in Aerospace Engineering from Kingston University. He was awarded the Royal Aeronautical Society prize for most distinguished student of the year and the British Aerospace prize for outstanding project work.

Stuart also holds the postgraduate Certificate in Intellectual Property Law from Queen Mary College, University of London.

Career History

Stuart joined Gill Jennings & Every in 2014, having trained at another top tier London firm of patent and trade mark attorneys and worked in-house in the intellectual property department of a leading UK aerospace company.

He entered the patent profession after a successful engineering career in the commercial and defence aerospace industries.

Stuart drafts and prosecutes UK, European and foreign patent applications on behalf of clients ranging from start-ups to multinational corporations. He also has experience in oppositions and appeals at the European Patent Office, infringement and validity opinions, and patent revocation actions.

As a chartered engineer and registered European engineer formerly employed at aerospace and defence prime contractors, Stuart has undertaken challenging projects for prestigious client organisations including the UK Ministry of Defence, the US Department of Defense, the US Air Force, the European Space Agency (ESA), Rolls-Royce, Airbus and Boeing.

During his years in industry Stuart gained particular technical capability in satellite propulsion and was the lead engineer responsible for the propulsion systems of ESA’s Mars Express and Venus Express spacecraft. Other areas of technical expertise and patent experience include: aircraft propulsion (especially gas turbine engines); spacecraft and aircraft conceptual design (including UAVs and airships); aerospace structures and subsystems; flight simulation (including mechanical systems, engines, autopilots & flight dynamics); aviation safety and accident investigation; automotive systems & components; oil & gas technologies; medical devices; and general mechanical engineering.

Stuart is familiar with the engineering design process and understands the difficulties faced in managing the development of new technologies. His wealth of industrial expertise, complemented by his in-house patent experience, makes Stuart adept at eliciting innovative ideas from inventors and advising on their commercial exploitation.

Outside of work, Stuart is a keen equestrian and can usually be found on a horse somewhere in the countryside.
