John is a European Patent Attorney with extensive experience in drafting, filing and prosecuting patent applications across a range of technologies in the fields of electrical, electronic and information engineering.

He works with and advises clients from across the globe, ranging from small start-ups to established multinational corporations, on generating and maintaining strong, commercially focussed patent portfolios.

Outside of the office, John is an avid mountaineer and skier, and trains in free weights, climbing and running. He previously served as an officer in the reserves of the British Army, leading soldiers within the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers

John’s practice specialises in technical areas including:

  • Medical technology, in particular diagnostic devices including wearables.
  • IT infrastructure, including network equipment and routing protocols.
  • Telecoms, in particular standards matching for mobile telecoms and optical fibre systems.
  • Cryptographic technologies, including quantum key distribution.

European Patent Attorney

John graduated from St John’s College, University of Cambridge with a Master’s degree in Electrical and Information Engineering, specialising in machine learning, photonics, and both optical fibre and RF communication systems. His final year project investigated spectral overlapping in multi-channel quantum key distribution systems. He obtained the PGCert in IP from Queen Mary University of London in 2022, coming top of his cohort in Designs and Copyright.

John qualified as a European Patent Attorney in 2024 whilst working for a top tier German patent law firm, before joining GJE as an associate in 2025.
