Jack advises on all aspects of patent protection, with particular expertise in software, AI, electronics and medical technologies. He acts as European counsel to major international technology companies, managing large patent portfolios in the fields of consumer electronics, software and video gaming technologies as well as acting as a trusted advisor to many high growth start-up and scale-ups in Europe.

Jack acts for several key clients on their European patent matters, including one of the world’s leading interactive entertainment companies and a leading company in the field of AI-assisted drug discovery. He advises multinational clients on their European patent strategy, including EPO oppositions, Unitary Patent and UPC opt-out decisions, and has significant experience supporting clients applying new advances in computing, AI and digital technologies, where he brings a deep understanding of the complex and shifting legal framework for patent protection in this area. Jack also works extensively with high-growth start-ups, university spin-outs and SMEs on global IP strategies that deliver the strongest early protection to support growth and fundraising, and acts as an IP advisor to accelerators, VCs and tech transfer offices across the UK. His work with investor clients on IP due diligence feeds directly back into his advice to start-ups on becoming investment ready.

A significant portion of Jack’s work relates to contentious matters, and he has extensive experience before the Opposition Divisions and Boards of Appeal of the EPO, with a strong track record both in defending clients’ granted patents and in revoking competitors’ patents.

Outside of the office, Jack’s time is largely allocated by his young children to a range of roles in their latest games, but he occasionally still manages to find time for running, cycling, cooking for friends and, probably ambitiously, planning the next bikepacking trip.

Jack’s approach is to always cut through the legal jargon to provide practical, easy to follow advice. His specialist areas include:

  • Advising on the protection of new medical and health technologies, particularly those employing the latest digital innovations
  • Software, AI and machine learning inventions, assisting innovators to navigate the complex legal restrictions
  • AI-assisted drug discovery
  • Semiconductor and electrical devices
  • Nanotechnology and nanomaterials, electron microscopy and sample characterisation apparatus, benefiting from his PhD research
  • Hosting innovation capture sessions to identify and harvest patentable products
  • Advocating for his clients before the Opposition Division and Boards of Appeal of the European Patent Office
  • Advising start-ups on implementing an IP strategy to maximise the value of their innovation
  • Providing Freedom-to-Operate and validity opinions, and using third party observations to restrict competitors patent scope prior to grant
  • Conducting due diligence on behalf of investors to audit and evaluate IP portfolios
