Jack graduated from the University of Bristol with 1st class Masters Degree in Physics. He went on to complete a DPhil in Materials Science at Oxford University, where his research focussed on the use of electron microscopy to characterise novel nitride semiconductor nanomaterials for application in optoelectronic devices.

Career History

Jack joined Gill Jennings & Every in 2014 and qualified as a European Patent Attorney in 2018 and a Chartered UK Patent Attorney in 2019.

Associate

Jack is a Chartered & European Patent Attorney, who advises on all aspects of patent protection, with particular expertise in protecting medical and health technologies, software and electrical devices. He has particular experience working with high-growth startups and acts as an IP advisor to a number of accelerators, VCs and tech transfer departments across the UK. A large portion of his work relates to contentious matters and he has significant experience representing clients before the Opposition Division and Boards of Appeal of the European Patent Office.

Main specialisms
Jack’s areas of specialism fall mainly across the broad fields of tech, software and mechanical and electrical engineering. Jack has developed particular expertise in advising on patent protection in the MedTech and HealthTech sectors, with an emphasis on supporting clients that are applying new advances in computing, AI and digital technologies to solving problems in healthcare. Further specific areas of technical expertise include:
• medical devices
• digital health technology
• machine learning
• semiconductor devices
• nanotechnology and nanomaterials
• sensors and measurement technology
• electron microscopy and sample characterisation techniques
• telecommunications
• consumer electrical devices.

A significant portion of Jack’s work involves advising on contentious patent issues and he has substantial experience of the opposition procedure at the European Patent Office, with a high success rate in defending his client’s granted patents and revoking their competitors’ patents. Further contentious experience includes:
• experienced in advocacy before both the Opposition Division and Boards of Appeal
• advising on ownership and inventorship disputes
• providing freedom-to-operate and validity opinions;
• effectively using third party observations to restrict competitors patent scope prior to grant.

Clients
Jack works with a wide range of clients from ambitious individuals, university spin-outs and SMEs to multi-national corporations. He has particular expertise in advising high-growth start-ups on developing a commercially minded IP strategy to protect their innovation. Jack has developed strong relationships across the UK start-up ecosystem and acts as IP advisor to a number of accelerators, VCs and tech transfer departments. Jack also works with a number of investor clients to support their IP due diligence and this experience feeds back in to his advice to start-ups to ensure they are investment ready.

Interests
Jack enjoys running and cycling and has completed a number of triathlons, raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support. He also enjoys football and as a fair weather Arsenal fan he has been periodically ignoring the football results for the last 15 years. Jack has a passion for cooking (that has only been partially crushed by a year in lockdown) and enjoys replicating recipes encountered on his travels, the most recent of which was to Japan.
