James graduated from the University of Leeds with a Master’s degree in Physics. As part of his studies he spent a year at McMaster University in Canada where he focused on nanotechnology and soft matter physics, using this to develop novel liquid crystal devices in his final year project at Leeds.
James joined Gill Jennings & Every in 2018 and is working towards full qualifications as a UK and European patent attorney. He was awarded with a Distinction for the Certificate in Intellectual Property Law from Queen Mary University of London.
Trainee Patent Attorney
James is part of the IT & Engineering team at GJE and is involved in drafting and prosecuting global patent portfolios. He mainly works with UK and European patents but regularly instructs the prosecution of applications in foreign jurisdictions, such as the US and China. In addition to his drafting and prosecution work, he also assists with contentious matters and provides advice on patent infringement and freedom to operate.
James works with inventions spanning a wide variety of technologies, with his main specialisms in the fields of mechanical and electronic devices, materials science and telecommunications. As part of GJE’s Computer Technology group, he is also familiar with navigating the threshold of patentability for computer-implemented inventions, and has specific experience with haptics, simulations and cryptography.
Some of James’ other specialisms include:
• Medical devices and technology
• Soft matter physics
• Scientific apparatus
Working alongside a broad range of clients, James has helped multinational corporations, SMEs, start-ups and individual inventors all protect their intellectual property. These include a world leading telecommunications and electronics company, a well-known manufacturer of consumer goods, and a number of computer technology start-ups.
In his spare time, James is a keen runner and will often be found training for his next race. He also enjoys travelling and, when back in London, recreating the food he tried during his trips.
