Joe is a European and UK patent attorney with experience across a broad range of technologies, including mechanical engineering, electronics, software, telecommunications, and other computing-related innovations. He has a particular interest in medical devices and sports technology and is a member of GJE’s sports technology sector group.

Joe works with a diverse range of clients, from individual inventors and start-ups to SMEs and multinational corporations. He advises clients at every stage of the patent lifecycle, from identifying and protecting new innovations through to strategic management of patent portfolios and advising on freedom-to-operate issues.

Joe also has significant experience in contentious patent matters, with a strong track record of securing successful outcomes for clients in opposition and appeal proceedings before the European Patent Office.

Outside of work, Joe is an avid reader and enjoys keeping active through running, cycling, and strength training.

Joe studied at the University of Cambridge and obtained a first class master’s degree in natural sciences, specialising in materials science. His final year project involved investigating the compressive mechanical behaviour of bearing steel micropillars, using the results to improve finite element models for bearing failure.

After joining GJE in 2018, Joe qualified as a European and UK patent attorney in 2022. In 2023, Joe obtained the intellectual property litigation certificate qualification.
