Joe McCartney

Trainee Patent Attorney

Joe is a Part-Qualified Patent Attorney with experience spanning a wide variety of technologies within engineering, computing, and electronics.

Joe works with a diverse range of clients, from individual inventors and SMEs to multinational corporations.  His work regularly involves drafting and prosecuting patent applications in the UK, Europe and further afield.  Joe also has experience in contentious matters, such as acting before the EPO in opposition proceedings.

Outside of work, Joe enjoys keeping fit by running, cycling and training at the gym.

Joe has experience spanning a wide range of technical fields, including:

  • Computer memory and data storage
  • Wind turbine technologies
  • Electronic cigarettes
  • Automotive engineering

Joe studied at the University of Cambridge and obtained a First Class Master’s degree in Natural Sciences, specialising in Materials Science. His final year project involved investigating the compressive mechanical behaviour of bearing steel micropillars, using the results to improve finite element models for bearing failure.

Since joining the firm in 2018, Joe has obtained a PG Certificate in Intellectual Property Law with distinction from Queen Mary University of London, and has also passed the EQE pre-examination. He recently sat the UK final exams and is currently preparing for the EQEs.
