Interested to hear first-hand what it’s like to join GJE as an experienced hire? Senior Associate Ian Jones (Chemistry and Life Sciences) and Associate Bosé Animasaun (Trade Marks) reveal why they chose GJE.
Having worked in the industry, I was well aware of the reputation of GJE not only as a top-tier IP firm, but also as a great place to work. With some of the leading names in European patent prosecution and opposition, to me GJE was the clear choice to continue my development as a patent attorney.
Even before starting I had a great impression of how GJE operated and its commitment to both its clients and members of staff. I was made to feel very welcome by the firm, and in particular by the members of the Chemistry and Life Science team, during my introductory meetings.
Right now, I’m working with clients from small start-ups and university spin-outs to multinational corporations, covering everything from new chemical entities to medical devices to personal and home care products to industrial chemicals. The work is varied; one day I will be drafting a new application, the next undertaking due diligence on a client’s prospective portfolio. The best thing is I have the opportunity to work on what interests me from all the firm has to offer. I have only to ask!
The work does also extend beyond that of a traditional patent attorney. A couple of months in and I had joined the pharmaceutical focused business development team. I was part of a consortium travelling in Europe, helping SMEs develop value chains as part of an initiative under the European Commission’s Horizon 2020 framework. I certainly don’t feel tied to my desk at GJE.
I enjoy the direct interaction with clients that GJE offers. For me, helping people capitalise on their IP pipeline and deliver innovative products to market creates huge job satisfaction. Of course, it helps to have a supportive team behind you to bounce ideas off, which my colleagues are quick to form.
I found what I was looking for at GJE. Perhaps you will too.
I joined GJE in October 2019 and, it has been one of the best decisions I have made. Prior to joining, I asked for feedback from other people within the industry. The feedback was unanimous: everyone I spoke to described it as “a great firm to work for”, “they have been around for a long time and it is a strong firm”, “it’s a firm you would want to put on your CV”. All of these and more is true of GJE. The people are key to making the firm what it is. The Trade Mark team in particular is full of friendly and approachable people. I particularly like the open door culture, in which associates and partners are free to ask each other’s opinions in respect of whatever case they are handling.
One of the things I really like about working at GJE is the diversity of work that hits my desk on a daily basis. My role entails assisting clients with a broad range of trade mark matters, but in the time I have been at GJE, I have worked on domain name disputes and succeeded in gaining a decision in favour of the client.
Working in GJE has also allowed me to get involved in other aspects of work life, such as GJE’s Diversity and Inclusion group, of which I am a member. GJE is already committed to promoting equality and this group goes a step further towards proving this, which adds to the reasons why I think so highly of the firm.
GJE has been a great choice, professionally for me, it is a great place to build your practice and the people are just great to work with. Finding a combination of all of these things in one firm is hard to find, but GJE has it all.
