Interested to hear first-hand what it’s like to join GJE as an experienced hire? Our Associates Ian Jones (Chemistry and Life Sciences) and Nathalie John (Trade Marks) reveal why they chose GJE.
Having worked in the industry, I was well aware of the reputation of GJE not only as a top-tier IP firm, but also as a great place to work. With some of the leading names in European patent prosecution and opposition, to me GJE was the clear choice to continue my development as a patent attorney.
Even before starting I had a great impression of how GJE operated and its commitment to both its clients and members of staff. I was made to feel very welcome by the firm, and in particular by the members of the Chemistry and Life Science team, during my introductory meetings.
Right now, I’m working with clients from small start-ups and university spin-outs to multinational corporations, covering everything from new chemical entities to medical devices to personal and home care products to industrial chemicals. The work is varied; one day I will be drafting a new application, the next undertaking due diligence on a client’s prospective portfolio. The best thing is I have the opportunity to work on what interests me from all the firm has to offer. I have only to ask!
The work does also extend beyond that of a traditional patent attorney. A couple of months in and I had joined the pharmaceutical focused business development team. I was part of a consortium travelling in Europe, helping SMEs develop value chains as part of an initiative under the European Commission’s Horizon 2020 framework. I certainly don’t feel tied to my desk at GJE.
I enjoy the direct interaction with clients that GJE offers. For me, helping people capitalise on their IP pipeline and deliver innovative products to market creates huge job satisfaction. Of course, it helps to have a supportive team behind you to bounce ideas off, which my colleagues are quick to form.
I found what I was looking for at GJE. Perhaps you will too.
Before joining GJE, I was contracting in-house for a luxury brand. I wanted to see what it was like on the other side and got an opportunity I couldn’t pass up. It was a great experience and I loved getting to know the brand inside out but I missed the variety and professional development you get from working in private practice. So when my contract finished, I applied for associate positions in London.
I didn’t know much about GJE until I applied – before going in house I was working for a firm in Cornwall so I was relatively new to the IP world in London! It didn’t take me long to learn how well regarded and friendly GJE is as a firm and I knew from the moment I had my interview that I would fit in and be a valued member of the team. That for me was one of the most important factors, especially being new to London life.
My job involves advising all kinds of businesses, from medical device companies to the food and drink sector, every day is different and it’s great. I love getting to know my clients and figuring out how I can best help them to maximise their trade mark protection and enforce their brands effectively. It’s not all work and no play though. Having joined last year, I got invited to co-captain the firm’s softball team which is great fun and also means another opportunity to socialise with the entire firm!
I can honestly say that GJE is the best place I have ever worked. It was tough when I first moved to the city but everyone made me feel so welcome and at home, it’s only a year on but I’ve already made so many good friends. I’ve also developed professionally in such a short amount of time, it’s truly a supportive environment and everyone is happy to take time out of their day to help if you need it. There’s also always something happening – whether it’s a professional development seminar or a social event, you’ll never be bored.
