Amy Thorne

Trainee Patent Attorney

Amy is a Trainee Patent Attorney in the Chemistry & Life Sciences group , and is working towards full qualification. She is involved in the drafting and prosecution of biotech patent applications before the European and UK patent offices and coordinates global patent prosecution for local clients. Amy also supports product development for clients by carrying out patent landscaping and freedom to operate analyses. She works with a variety of clients but primarily with high growth start ups and SMEs in the biopharma space in the UK and Europe.

In her free time, Amy enjoys backpacking trips, hosting dinner parties, and undertaking craft and DIY projects.

Amy’s areas of specialism is mainly in the biotechnology field. She has experience dealing with:

  • Antibody therapeutics
  • Nucleic acid-based therapies
  • Gene and cell therapies
  • Immunotherapies
  • Synthetic biology
  • Agricultural biotechnology

Amy graduated top of the order of merit from the University of Bristol with a First Class degree in Medical Microbiology. During her third year of university, Amy worked at a biotech start-up, supporting the validation of their bacterial diagnostics technologies.

Following her degree, she completed a Master’s in Immunology at Imperial College London, where she was awarded the Dean’s Prize for the highest overall mark on the course. Her Master’s project focused on the identification of novel biomarkers for osteoarthritis in synovial fluid. Amy joined GJE in September 2025.
