Ross graduated from the University of Edinburgh with an Honours Degree in Medical Microbiology and went on to obtain a PhD in Molecular Biology/Biochemistry from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine studying malaria.
Ross joined Gill Jennings & Every in 2017, having previously worked at another top tier firm of patent and trademark attorneys. Ross also spent two years working in-house as Intellectual Property Counsel at a multinational pharmaceutical company between these roles.
Ross originally joined the patent profession in 2006 and qualified as a Chartered Patent Attorney in 2011 and a European Patent Attorney in 2012.
Ross’ core practice is in drafting and prosecuting UK and European patent applications. Ross is known for his clear and accessible explanations of complex matters and has a strong track record of getting difficult cases granted at the European Patent Office. Ross also has a very high success rate with European oppositions and appeals, both defending and opposing.
Ross’ areas of specialism are mainly in the biotechnology, diagnostics and therapeutics fields but he also assists clients in the medical device field. He has particular experience in the following technologies:

Ross also performs specialist work supporting product life cycle management strategy, and strategic operational and investment decisions. For example, he frequently advises on the following:
• Patent due diligence
• Freedom to operate in view of European and UK patents
• Supplementary Protection Certificate (SPC) filings and prosecution
• EPO oppositions
• UKIPO revocation actions.
Ross works with a diverse range of clients, including UK and EU-based Small to Medium Enterprises, UK universities, and large multinational companies. He also handles European patent portfolios and oppositions on behalf of overseas clients, particularly US-based companies. Notable clients include a Danish university spin out developing therapeutics for diabetes-related disorders, a UK university spin out developing cancer vaccines, a UK university spin-out developing cardiac diagnostics, a multinational household name in food products and a UK company developing drug delivery systems.

In his spare time, Ross enjoys spending quality time with his wife, daughter and son. Ross also likes to get in regular workouts at his local Crossfit box and on his Peloton bike. Ross loves a good sci-fi book or movie, the occasional round of golf and an annual ski trip.
