John is an experienced patent attorney with a wide-ranging chemistry practice. He has significant experience in the fields of commodity chemicals and intermediates, polymer chemistry and polymer films, electroactive materials for lithium-ion batteries, oil and gas recovery and refining, medical consumables, and pharmaceuticals.

John has a particular interest in contentious inter-partes proceedings at the European Patent Office. He has extensive experience advising major multinational clients on opposition strategy and he has an enviable record of success as an advocate following numerous appearances before the EPO Opposition Divisions and Boards of Appeal.

Alongside his opposition practice, John also enjoys working with a range of clients on the drafting and prosecution of commercially-relevant patent portfolios. He has particular experience advising UK-based SMEs and works closely with these clients to develop an IP strategy that adds value against a backdrop of fast-moving commercial objectives and a crowded patent landscape.

John was identified as a “commended” practitioner in the 2018 edition of IP Stars.

Away from the office, John is an accomplished classical pianist and performs regularly in concerts and recitals. He keeps fit by running the occasional half-marathon.
